Sunshine Ridge Arabians is a picturesque Arabian facility nestled in the foothills of Northern California, about 90 miles north east of Sacramento, and owned by husband and wife team, Peter and Marianne Downing. We focus on managing a modest band of the highest quality Arabians, standing only one stallion Nedal and foaling about ten broodmares a year. We offer our clients the unique opportunity to own some of the most well mannered and trained foals in the industry. Working closely with SRA’s head trainer, Allison Holman, owner of Heavenly Farm Arabians, we are able to offer our clients horses that they can grow with and show to the highest level of competition or just enjoy as a member of the family. “Here at Sunshine Ridge Arabians the physical and mental health of our horses is the most important thing to us. Not only because we love and cherish these creatures,” says trainer Allison Holman, “but because of the rigorous demands set upon them to be successful breeding and show horses year round.”

Sunshine Ridge Arabians began as a dream that is now a reality. Peter and I left the comfort of our home in the city of Chico California with all the amenities’ close by to begin a new adventure in the mountain community of Forest Ranch California. The home and acreage we purchased belonged to a horse trainer and his rodeo performance riding wife. We brought with us our three horses, two dogs and two African Leapord tortoises . I continued to work fulltime at a community college while Pete, who had retired ,cared for our animals and property. After the loss of my 25 year old half Arabian mare we bought our first foundation Arabian mare, Magenta PA and bred her to Fire an Ice. Soon after Magenta foaled, a beautiful filly we were lucky enough to meet Allison Holman. She is now our resident trainer and marketing manager. She helped guide us in building our small broodmare band who have been bred to some of the nations top Arabian stallions. I have since retired from my job and now work fulltime with Allison and my husband as we pursue the Arabian breeders dream. Our goals include offering high quality Arabian colts and fillies who are trainable and tractable. We believe in finding the right niche for each of our horses so we start early with establishing a good foundation of easy handling and good ground manners. We believe this allows for a greater market potential and cements the possibilities of a great future for each of our offspring, whether that might be a regional or national show home or a loving family home. We dedicate ourselves to the protection and preservation of this magnificent breed and we know we are privileged to bask in the beauty and serenity of these incredible creatures. History From the ancient deserts of the Middle East evolved the oldest known breed of riding horse, the Arabian. Now one of the most popular breeds in America, the Arabians' incredible energy, intelligence and gentle disposition allow riders to excel in most equine sports and activities. Today, Arabian horses spend as much time on the trail as they do at horse shows and other competitive events. For thousands of years, Arabians lived among the desert tribes of the Arabian peninsula, bred by the Bedouins as war mounts for long treks and quick forays into enemy camps. In these harsh desert conditions evolved the Arabian with its large lung capacity and incredible endurance. Historical figures like Genghis Khan, Napoleon, Alexander The Great and George Washington rode Arabians. Even today, one finds descendants from the earliest Arabian horses of antiquity. Then, a man's wealth was measured in his holdings of these fine animals. Given that the Arabian was the original source of quality and speed, and remains foremost in the fields of endurance and soundness, he still either directly or indirectly contributed to the formation of virtually all the modern breeds of horses.
The prophet Mohammed, in the seventh century AD, was instrumental in spreading the Arabian's influence around the world. He instructed his followers to look after Arabians and treat them with kindness. He instructed that special attentions should be paid to the mares because they insure the continuity of the breed. He also proclaimed that Allah had created the Arabian, and that those who treated the horse well would be rewarded in the afterlife.The severe climate required the nomads to share food and water, and sometimes even their tents with their horses. As a result, Arabians developed a close affinity to man and a high intelligence. Over the centuries, the Bedouin tribes zealously maintained the purity of the breed. Because of their limited resources, breeding practices were extremely selective. Such practices, which eventually helped the Arabian become a prized possession throughout the world, have led to the beautiful athletic breed we know today, which is marked by a distinctive dished profile; large, lustrous, wide-set eyes on a broad forehead; small, curved ears; and large, efficient nostrils. Even today the purebred Arabian is virtually the same as that ridden in ancient Arabia. Arabians now display their athletic talents in a variety of disciplines from English to Western, with the Arabian positioned as the undisputed champion of endurance events.
